Ammo Roles — What Are You Loading For?
Defensive
Self-Defense / Carry

Expanding hollow points designed for reliable function in defensive firearms, controlled penetration (12–18" in gel per FBI protocol), and consistent expansion. Premium price. Run at least 200 rounds of your carry ammo through your gun to verify reliability.

Training
Range / Practice

FMJ or plated bullets for volume shooting. Cheapest per round. Prioritize reliability and clean-burning powder. Not designed for terminal performance — do not carry FMJ for self-defense.

Suppressor
Subsonic / Suppressor Use

Subsonic loads stay below ~1,050 fps to eliminate the supersonic crack. Heavier bullets at lower velocity. Essential for maximizing suppressor effectiveness. Not all calibers have practical subsonic options.

Precision
Match / Competition

Tighter tolerances on bullet weight, powder charge, and OAL. Consistent velocity (low standard deviation). Premium bullets like Sierra MatchKing, Hornady ELD Match, and Berger Hybrid. Higher cost per round.

Hunting
Game / Terminal Performance

Controlled expansion, deep penetration, and weight retention. Bullet construction matters enormously — bonded, partition, and monolithic designs hold together at impact velocity. Match bullet to game size.

Duty
LE / Duty Use

FBI-protocol tested expanding ammunition with barrier-blind performance (auto glass, drywall, heavy clothing). Specific LE contract loads from Federal, Speer, Hornady, and Winchester dominate this segment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the single best self-defense 9mm round?
Federal HST 124gr is the most widely recommended by LE agencies, defensive firearms instructors, and independent gel testing. Speer Gold Dot 124gr is an equally valid choice. Both have decades of street-proven performance. The best round is the one that functions reliably in YOUR specific firearm — always test with your carry gun.
Is FMJ OK for self-defense?
No. FMJ does not expand on impact. It passes through the target with minimal energy transfer and maximum over-penetration risk. FMJ is for training only. Carry JHP (hollow point) ammunition designed for defensive use. Every major manufacturer makes a defensive line specifically for this purpose.
How much carry ammo should I test before trusting it?
200 rounds minimum without a single malfunction. This verifies reliable feeding, extraction, and function with your specific firearm, magazines, and recoil spring. If your gun chokes on your carry ammo during testing, switch to a load that runs reliably — performance means nothing if the gun jams.
Does +P make a meaningful difference for 9mm carry?
Modern bullet designs like Federal HST and Speer Gold Dot achieve excellent expansion and penetration at standard pressure. +P adds 50–100 fps but also increases recoil, flash, blast, and component wear. For most shooters, standard-pressure premium JHP is the better choice. +P makes more sense in short barrels where the extra velocity helps expansion reliability.
What ammo should I use in a suppressor?
For maximum quiet: subsonic ammunition (below ~1,050 fps). For 9mm: 147gr subsonic loads. For .300 BLK: 200–220gr subsonic. For .45 ACP: standard 230gr (already subsonic). For .22 LR: CCI Standard Velocity or CCI Quiet. For 5.56 and .308: no practical subsonic option exists — the suppressor reduces muzzle blast but the supersonic crack remains.
Is steel-case ammo bad for my gun?
Not in the way most people think. Steel cases do cause slightly more extractor wear than brass, and the lacquer/polymer coating can leave residue. But for a modern, quality firearm, thousands of rounds of steel-case will not cause meaningful damage. The bigger concern is that steel-case ammo often uses bimetal (steel-core) bullets that can damage steel targets and are banned at many indoor ranges. It's also not reloadable.
What does "barrier blind" mean?
FBI testing protocol includes shooting through intermediate barriers: heavy clothing, drywall, plywood, sheet metal, and auto glass. "Barrier blind" ammunition performs consistently regardless of what it passes through before hitting the target. Loads like Hornady Critical Duty, Federal HST, and Speer Gold Dot are specifically designed and tested for barrier-blind performance.
Should I use the same ammo brand as my firearm?
No — that is a marketing concept, not a ballistic requirement. Federal HST works identically in a Glock, SIG, S&W, or any other reliable 9mm pistol. Choose ammunition based on its performance characteristics, your testing results, and your role — not brand matching.
How should I store ammunition?
Cool, dry, and stable temperature. Ammunition does not need refrigeration. A climate-controlled room or safe is ideal. Avoid extreme heat (car trunk in summer), moisture, and solvents. Modern factory ammunition stored properly will remain reliable for decades. Rotate carry ammo annually by shooting your old carry rounds at the range and replacing with fresh.
Does the $0 NFA tax stamp affect ammo?
No. The $0 NFA tax stamp under P.L. 119-21 applies to NFA items (suppressors, SBRs). Ammunition is not an NFA item. However, owning a suppressor (now more accessible with the $0 stamp) may change your ammo choices — subsonic loads become much more practical and relevant when you have a can to put them behind.
