Ammo Selection
Guide
Factory ammunition recommendations by platform and role — self-defense, range training, precision, hunting, and suppressor use. Real brand and product names with honest context on what each load is designed for and where it works best.
Expanding hollow points designed for reliable function in defensive firearms, controlled penetration (12–18" in gel per FBI protocol), and consistent expansion. Premium price. Run at least 200 rounds of your carry ammo through your gun to verify reliability.
FMJ or plated bullets for volume shooting. Cheapest per round. Prioritize reliability and clean-burning powder. Not designed for terminal performance — do not carry FMJ for self-defense.
Subsonic loads stay below ~1,050 fps to eliminate the supersonic crack. Heavier bullets at lower velocity. Essential for maximizing suppressor effectiveness. Not all calibers have practical subsonic options.
Tighter tolerances on bullet weight, powder charge, and OAL. Consistent velocity (low standard deviation). Premium bullets like Sierra MatchKing, Hornady ELD Match, and Berger Hybrid. Higher cost per round.
Controlled expansion, deep penetration, and weight retention. Bullet construction matters enormously — bonded, partition, and monolithic designs hold together at impact velocity. Match bullet to game size.
FBI-protocol tested expanding ammunition with barrier-blind performance (auto glass, drywall, heavy clothing). Specific LE contract loads from Federal, Speer, Hornady, and Winchester dominate this segment.
| Role | Load | Bullet | Velocity (4" bbl) | Why This One |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Self-Defense | Federal HST 124gr | JHP | ~1,150 fps | The most recommended defensive 9mm; consistent 0.50"+ expansion; 14–16" penetration; used by hundreds of LE agencies |
| Self-Defense | Speer Gold Dot 124gr | JHP (bonded) | ~1,150 fps | Bonded core prevents jacket separation; FBI protocol tested; LE contract standard alongside HST |
| Self-Defense | Hornady Critical Duty 135gr | FlexLock | ~1,010 fps | Barrier-blind design (auto glass, drywall); FlexLock tip prevents clogging; optimized for duty-length barrels |
| Self-Defense | Federal Punch 124gr | JHP | ~1,150 fps | Consumer-market defensive load; simpler SKU availability than HST in some markets |
| Range / Practice | Federal American Eagle 115gr | FMJ | ~1,180 fps | Clean-burning, reliable, widely available; the baseline 9mm range round |
| Range / Practice | Winchester White Box 115gr | FMJ | ~1,190 fps | Budget option; slightly dirtier than AE; high availability |
| Range / Practice | Blazer Brass 115gr | FMJ | ~1,145 fps | CCI-made; brass case; reloadable; excellent budget option |
| Subsonic / Suppressor | Federal American Eagle Subsonic 147gr | FMJ | ~985 fps | Factory subsonic; reliable cycling in most semi-autos; good suppressor pairing |
| Subsonic / Suppressor | Federal HST 147gr | JHP | ~1,000 fps | Near-subsonic defensive load; excellent expansion even at low velocity; suppressor-friendly for carry guns |
| Role | Load | Bullet | Velocity (16") | Why This One |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home Defense | Hornady 75gr BTHP TAP | BTHP | ~2,790 fps | Heavy-for-caliber; tumbles/fragments quickly; reduced over-penetration risk vs M855 |
| Home Defense | Federal Fusion 62gr | Bonded SP | ~3,000 fps | Bonded core for controlled expansion; good barrier performance; widely available |
| Home Defense | Speer Gold Dot 75gr | Bonded HP | ~2,790 fps | LE-oriented; bonded for barrier-blind performance; 1:7 or 1:8 twist required |
| Range / Training | Federal XM193 55gr | FMJ | ~3,150 fps | M193 ball equivalent; the standard 5.56 training round |
| Range / Training | PMC X-TAC 55gr | FMJ | ~3,200 fps | Korean military spec; reliable; often cheaper than Federal |
| Precision / Match | Federal Gold Medal 77gr SMK | Sierra MatchKing | ~2,720 fps | The benchmark .223 match load; MK262-equivalent; 1:7 or 1:8 twist |
| Precision / Match | Hornady 73gr ELD Match | ELD Match | ~2,790 fps | Heat-resistant polymer tip; consistent BC; excellent long-range .223 option |
| Varmint / Hunting | Hornady 55gr V-MAX | Polymer tip | ~3,240 fps | Explosive expansion; excellent for varmint and predator; not for large game |
| Role | Load | Bullet | Velocity (9") | Why This One |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home Defense (Super) | Barnes 110gr TAC-TX | All-copper HP | ~2,200 fps | Monolithic copper; deep penetration; no lead fragmentation; excellent from short barrels |
| Home Defense (Sub) | Hornady Sub-X 190gr | Sub-X (polymer tip) | ~1,050 fps | Subsonic expanding bullet; designed specifically for suppressed .300 BLK home defense |
| Suppressor / Subsonic | Federal American Eagle 220gr OTM | OTM Subsonic | ~1,000 fps | Affordable subsonic; reliable cycling; quiet with a can |
| Suppressor / Subsonic | Magtech 200gr FMJ Subsonic | FMJ | ~1,050 fps | Budget subsonic; reliable; good for volume suppressed shooting |
| Supersonic | Federal Fusion 150gr | Bonded SP | ~1,900 fps | Hunting load; bonded core for game; effective to ~200 yards from short barrels |
Critical safety note: .300 BLK and 5.56/.223 share the same magazine and lower receiver. A .300 BLK round will chamber in a 5.56 barrel and fire — causing catastrophic failure. Always mark magazines, label uppers, and never mix .300 BLK and 5.56 on the same bench or range bag.
